Ted Talks are world wide conventions where some of the brightest, most interesting, and knowledgeable people are invited to give wisdom and advice. My husband found this talk by Psychologist, Sherry Turkle. She gives what I think is a very well thought out and profound talk about how social media, connecting through technology and the effects that these things are having on this generation of adolescents today is taking us in a direction we don't want to go. And what we can do about it.

She goes into detail about why it is extremely important for adolescents to learn to develop face to face relationships. She says "self reflection is the bed rock of development for adolescents" and that this self reflection is becoming absent in this generation of adolescents, she goes into what is happening because of this.
These few sentences do not give justice to this talk. It's excellent. It's dynamic and she covers so much in a short amount of time. I would encourage you to watch as soon as you have a moment to really listen to what she has to say.
For Family Home Evening a few weeks ago, we watched her talk with our three oldest children and then asked each one of them what part of her talk resonated with them the most. Kalen had the most to say and that was mainly about the dynamic he sees at his church youth group on Wednesday nights. He said that before the meeting starts a large part of the group are on their phones texting and after the meeting is ended they are back, texting. Kalen said only he and a couple of other kids don't have phones. My kids loved this talk. We talked about it for a long time, they had a lot to say about it. I think she, Sherry Turkle, can really help youth understand why the direction we are headed with this technology can and is hurting us. "Let's Talk," is the theme of her presentation...so let's talk. It's time.
